Episode 3.10 "Summer School Blues"
[The first day of summer]
Casey: (to Derek) Shouldn't you be at the beach starting your summer job as bikini inspector?
George: Derek has to take a week of summer school to rewrite a physics exam.
Casey: Oh, that's right! So while Marti and I are at school having fun, you'll be stuck in a classroom. Hmm. Well, see you at the water fountain!
[Derek growls]
Casey: For some, summer is the time to kick back and relax. For others, it's time to gain some valuable work experience. But for Derek, summer is a lot like the school year -- only hotter.
[Derek leads the kids at Fun Camp in revolting against Casey]
Derek: Ceasefire!
Casey: Der-ek!
Derek: What can I say? I got a way with the kids!
Derek: If Captain Venturi and the Alpha Force were a little rough on the alien intruder, then just get us back tomorrow.
Casey: Tomorrow you'll be back at summer school -- where you belong.
Derek: Oh, no I won't. And you're in way over your head.
Casey: I am not in way over my head. (she thinks) Yeah, I totally am.
Derek: And since I'm stuck in school, I thought, why not make this work for the both of us?
Casey: How much do you want?
Derek: Two-thirds, up front, no refunds.
Casey: Forget it, Captain Venturi! One third.
Derek: One half, or I don't do it.
Casey: Done.
[Derek has set up an obstacle course for the Fun Camp kids]
Derek: Welcome to Captain Venturi's Ultimate Space Obstacle Challenge!
Marti: Cool!
Casey: This was not in my activity plan!
Derek: Oh, if you're looking for your activity plan, I'd check the bottom of Edwin's bird-cages.
Casey: What??
[Casey looks depressed watching Derek play with the kids]
Marti: You wanna try the Alpha Force course?
Casey: No thanks, Marti. It's not my thing.
Marti: Listen, I'm sorry for painting you before, and for sneaking away, and the paper balls!
Casey: I'm just glad you guys are having a good time with Derek.
Marti: I like hanging out with you, too.
Casey: Really?
Marti: Sure! You're pretty, you're smart, you're organized!
Casey: Aw, that's nice. Thank you, Marti.
Marti: So you wanna try?
Casey: Uh, I don't think so.
[Derek comes from out of nowhere to slip a hula-hoop over Casey's head]
Derek: Force field is activated.
[After the dismissal of Fun Camp]
Casey: Derek, I have to thank you for unleashing our inner troopers including mine. And if you wanna borrow any of my physics notes, it's totally fine.
Derek: Physics?? No, I have an exam on that tomorrow! Somebody's Laws of Motion!
Casey: Newton?
Derek: Sounds right.
[Casey finds Derek in his room studying]
Casey: So, how's Newton going?
Derek: Terribly. Why do you think I'm in summer school?
Casey: 'Cuz you were too lazy to study during the year?
Derek: Well, there's that.... But I just don't get it. Force equals mass times acceleration? I mean, who's trying to force what mass to accelerate??
[Casey and Marti try to help Derek study for physics]
Casey: Presenting, Newton's Laws of Motion!
Marti: First law of motion is a piece of cake.
Casey: Things don't move till they get a shake!
Derek: An educational poem? Please.
Marti: Second law of motion is all about the force --
Casey: If something hits hard, then the object takes that course!
Marti: Third law of motion gives you satisfaction --
Casey: For every force made, there's an opposite reaction!
[After the poem, Marti leaves]
Casey: It was her idea. We thought we'd put a little fun into your summer learning.
Derek: Oh, thank you. Now go.
[Casey leaves, but listens by the doorway as Derek starts to recite the poem to himself]
[Casey and the kids are waiting in the hallway for Derek after his test]
Casey: Did you pass?
Derek: Uh, he still has to correct it, and something tells me Mr. Nod's not the fastest marker in the world.
[Mr. Nod comes out of the room]
Casey: Did he pass??
Mr. Nod: Who are you?
Casey: Derek's step-sister.
Mr. Nod: And the kids?
Derek: Oh, the Alpha Force.
Marti: So did he pass or what?
Mr. Nod: Well, you got a...51.
Marti: Is a 51 good?
Mr. Nod: Not really, no.
Derek and Casey: But it's a pass!! (they high-five)
Casey: Uh, Derek, the kids and I were wondering if maybe you wanted to stay in summer camp?
[The kids start chanting "One more week"]
Casey: One more week?
Derek: Ah, I guess I could do something. What can I say, kids dig me!
Marti: Best summer ever!
